Land of the Lustrous
Land of the Lustrous (Japanese: 宝石の国, Hepburn: Hōseki no Kuni) is a breathtaking Science Fantasy and Philosophical Drama created by Haruko Ichikawa. Serialized from 2012 to 2024, it is celebrated for its avant-garde art style, its profound exploration of Buddhist concepts, and its devastating character transformation.
The story is set in a far-distant future where humanity is extinct. In their place, 28 Lustrous—immortal, genderless lifeforms made of gemstones—inhabit a small island. They are led by Master Kongō and are constantly hunted by the Lunarians, mysterious beings from the Moon who want to shatter the gems and turn them into jewelry. The protagonist, Phosphophyllite (Phos), is the youngest and one of the most fragile gems (with a Mohs hardness of only 3.5). Too weak for battle and too clumsy for other crafts, Phos is assigned the tedious task of compiling a natural history encyclopedia, a journey that eventually leads to a haunting evolution of body and mind.
