Beastars
Beastars (Japanese: ビースターズ, Hepburn: Bīsutāzu) is a critically acclaimed Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Paru Itagaki. Serialized in Weekly Shōnen Champion from 2016 to 2020, it is a daring, mature take on the anthropomorphic animal genre, using its diverse cast to explore complex themes of prejudice, puberty, and the primal conflict between instinct and civilization.
The story is set at Cherryton Academy, a boarding school where herbivores and carnivores coexist in a fragile, socially mandated peace. This peace is shattered when an alpaca named Tem is brutally devoured by an unknown student. The protagonist, Legoshi, a large but painfully shy and sensitive gray wolf, finds himself at the center of the growing tension. His life becomes even more complicated when he develops confusing, intense feelings for Haru, a dwarf rabbit who is often ostracized by her peers. Legoshi must determine if his obsession with Haru is a manifestation of romantic love or a predatory desire to eat her, all while competing for the title of "Beastar"—a social leader destined to unite the fractured animal society.
