Battle Angel Alita
Battle Angel Alita (Japanese: 銃夢, Hepburn: Ganmu, lit. "Gun Dream") is a seminal cyberpunk manga series created by Yukito Kishiro. First serialized in 1990, it is a cornerstone of the genre, known for its philosophical depth, visceral cyborg combat, and a richly detailed "scrap-heap" aesthetic that explores what it truly means to be human.
The story is set in the dystopian Scrapyard, a sprawling, lawless city located beneath Tiphares (Zalem), a mysterious, floating utopia that dumps its refuse on the inhabitants below. The plot begins when Daisuke Ido, a cybernetics doctor, finds the intact head and chest of a young cyborg girl in a junkyard. He rebuilds her and names her Alita (Gally in the original Japanese). Although she has lost her memories, Alita discovers she is a master of Panzer Kunst, a legendary, nearly extinct martial art designed for cyborgs. As she journeys from being a bounty hunter to a professional Motorball player and eventually an agent of the heavens, Alita seeks to reclaim her past while navigating a world where flesh is cheap and machine parts are everything.
