Hunter x Hunter (EN)
Hunter x Hunter (Japanese: ハンター×ハンター, Hepburn: Hantā Hantā) is a masterpiece of the "Battle Shonen" genre, written and illustrated by the legendary Yoshihiro Togashi (also the creator of YuYu Hakusho). It is widely regarded as one of the most intelligent, complex, and unpredictable series ever created, known for its strategic combat and subverting typical tropes.
The story follows Gon Freecss, a young boy who discovers that his father, who he thought was dead, is actually alive and a world-renowned Hunter—an elite licensed professional who specializes in tracking secret treasures, rare beasts, or even other individuals. To find his father, Gon leaves his home to take the grueling Hunter Exam. Along the way, he meets three inseparable friends: Killua Zoldyck, the heir to a family of deadly assassins; Kurapika, the last survivor of a slaughtered clan; and Leorio, a man who dreams of becoming a doctor to help the poor.

Key Characteristics & Tropes
-
Nen (The Power System): Widely considered the "gold standard" of power systems in anime. It is based on the manipulation of life energy (Aura). It is incredibly logical and divided into six categories (Enhancement, Transmutation, Conjuration, Emission, Manipulation, and Specialization).
-
The "Mind Game" Battles: Battles in Hunter x Hunter are rarely won by raw power alone. Success depends on psychological warfare, understanding the opponent's "Nen" limitations, and tactical planning.
-
Genre-Shifting Arcs: Every arc feels like a different genre. The Hunter Exam is an adventure, Yorknew City is a dark crime thriller, Greed Island is a card-based RPG, and the Chimera Ant arc is a philosophical war epic.
-
Dark Subtext: Despite its colorful character designs, the series is notoriously dark. It explores themes of genocide, human experimentation, corruption, and the thin line between heroism and monstrosity.
