Vagabond
Vagabond (Japanese: バガボンド, Hepburn: Bagabondo) is an award-winning Historical Seinen masterpiece written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue (Slam Dunk, REAL). Since its debut in 1998, it has been hailed as one of the most visually stunning and philosophically profound manga ever created, winning the prestigious Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.
The story is a fictionalized retelling of the life of Japan’s most famous swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi, based on Eiji Yoshikawa's novel Musashi. It begins in 1600, following the bloody Battle of Sekigahara, where a wild and violent youth named Shinmen Takezō survives the slaughter. Labeled a "demon child" by his village, he is eventually renamed Miyamoto Musashi by a Buddhist monk. The manga tracks his evolution from a "beast" who only knows how to kill into a legendary philosopher-warrior seeking to understand what it truly means to be "Invincible Under the Heavens."
