Black Sun
Black Sun (often associated with the title Kamen Rider Black Sun) is a gritty, mature reimagining of the classic 1987 tokusatsu series Kamen Rider Black. Released as a 10-episode series in late 2022 to celebrate the franchise's 50th anniversary, it was directed by Kazuya Shiraishi and has been adapted into various media, including a manga adaptation that captures its dark, political, and visceral tone.
The story is set in a world where Kaijin (monsters) and humans have coexisted for 50 years, but tensions are at a breaking point. Amidst systemic discrimination and political conspiracies, two step-brothers—Kotaro Minami and Nobuhiko Akizuki—who were operated on as children to become the "Creation King," find themselves on opposite sides of a revolution. While the original series was a heroic action show for children, Black Sun is a brutal Seinen drama exploring racism, government corruption, and the loss of innocence.
