Fruits Basket
Fruits Basket (Japanese: フルーツバスケット, Hepburn: Furūtsu Basuketto) is a legendary Shojo masterpiece and a pillar of the Slice-of-Life and Supernatural Drama genres. Created by Natsuki Takaya and serialized from 1998 to 2006, it is one of the best-selling shojo manga of all time, beloved for its deep emotional intelligence and exploration of trauma.
The story follows Tohru Honda, a kind and optimistic high school girl who, after losing her mother, ends up living in a tent. She is discovered by her popular classmate, Yuki Sohma, and his cousin Shigure, who invite her to live with them. Tohru soon discovers the Sohma family’s dark secret: they are cursed by the spirits of the Chinese Zodiac. When hugged by someone of the opposite sex or under great stress, they transform into their respective zodiac animals. Tohru vows to break the curse, but she soon realizes that the "curse" is as much about psychological abuse and isolation as it is about magic.
